Tomb of the Unknown Aztec - Acrylic on Canvas

Cortes destroyed the Aztec empire in the three years between 1519 and 1521. He used brute force, manipulation of rival Aztec states fighting the the rule of Montezuma, advanced weapons, and ideological subversion to bring down an entire culture. The Aztecs population declined rapidly due too small pox, the ravages of war, and torture under Spanish imperialism. The survivors were forced to convert to Catholicism and an entire peoples was wiped off the face of the earth. This painting is in remembrance of a lost land and empire.
